About

We come to therapy with the hope that our lives can be better, but we often don’t know what to change or how. In therapy we gain the insight that allows us to transform and move forward.

Therapy helps us see ourselves, others, and life in general in a new way. We’re able to look at how our experience has shaped us and see the patterns of thinking and behaving that no longer serve us. Then, we’re free to discover who we actually are.

Goals of therapy include more peace, happiness, agency, spontaneity, and feeling more alive. In addition, we can work on short-term goals and day-to-day coping strategies.

Therapy with me is relaxed and conversational. I provide a safe space in which to explore what’s important to you. You are free to discuss your challenges and strengths along with your hopes for the future. We can look at the stories you tell yourself about life and your place in it, in an effort to uncover and transform those stories that keep you small.

You can expect calm, compassion, empathy, intuition, patience and non-judgment. I practice medium to long-term therapy (typically 6 months or more) and I meet with people once a week for a full 60-minute hour ($150 per session).

I decided to become a psychotherapist as a result of my own transformative experience in therapy. I went to therapy because I was suffering, stuck, and generally lost. Over time, I found a new sense of peace and freedom, along with the feeling of being more at home in myself and in the world.

I trained at the Centre for Training in Psychotherapy, a 6-year master’s-level program.

Prior to entering private practice I worked for many years in the helping professions, including foster care, long-term care, home care, and mental health nursing.  As a nurse I worked mostly in community-based treatment programs for people living with psychosis.  In addition to healthcare, I’ve had a wide variety of other jobs over the course of my life, from shoe salesperson to Blackjack dealer.

If you would like to schedule a free 30-minute consultation, please contact me at michaelgbernard7@gmail.com.  This meeting will help us to figure out if we’re a good fit and give you a chance to ask any questions that you may have.  I usually am able to reply within 24 hours.
